Last night as I was watching the 9PM news, there was an item about how a 17 year old girl, one Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan, won the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. I watched the entire item with a heart heavily laden with envy, then headed to my PC to find out exactly who this girl is. Just so you know, she is the youngest Nobel Peace laureate so far.

Apparently, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman two years ago at Khushal Public School owned by her father for insisting that girls as well as boys have the right to an education. Surviving several operations with the help of British medical care, she continued both her activism and her studies.
At some point, I laughed. I know there’s nothing to laugh about so far, but my crazy mind was working in top gear. Here’s why.
Tell me. What were you doing when you were 17 years old?
Here’s my story.

When I was 17 years old, I was in my latter high school life. I was busy chasing after anything in a skirt and scenting letters to send my high school sweetheart. Not that I never used to study. I actually used to study. Well, not much though. I’m kidding. I was a bookworm.

Don’t laugh at me. At least I have reply letters to show.
What about the current 17 year old kids?
The male 17 year of 2014 is busy looking for bogus Supra sneakers, colored jeans and very fake Ray-Bans, if he is not hanging out in the CBD somewhere around Kenya Cinema or one of those Tuskys supermarkets in the CBD planning for his blind date only to be stood up.
On the other hand, their female counterparts are busy posting twerk videos on Instagram (I hear they are called “Instavideos”) as well as acquiring weird accents immediately they pass by Mr. Price. Did I mention they are also busy trying to get punctured, sorry, I mean piercings all over them to acquire only God knows what.
For the older generations, at 17 years they were all thinking about siring kids or getting buns in their ovens since they were already “happily” married. Forgive my bluntness.
In a nutshell, most of us were pretty busy living the adolescent life at that age, but clearly, we have outstanding adolescents. I don’t regret though. I did what was to be done at that stage in life
So if anyone asks you what you did when you were 17, smile broadly, look them in the eyes and tell them,
“When I was 17 I was busy living the adolescent life” that’s outstanding. Trust me. So is your gullibility.
Do something worthwhile with your life before it’s too late.
