Early this year, my friends and I had a very heated debate on one very sensitive and weirdly interesting topic; tribalism.

So we sort out to verify. Just how deep rooted this vice is in our beloved mother land.

Many are the times we’ll brush it aside and cover it all with a broad smile. I mean, Kenya hakuna matata. Right? WRONG!

As much as we’d love to deny it, tribalism thrives in our midst, solely feeding on ideas that are utterly primitive and fueled by a “we are greater and better” attitude emanating from a couple of very self-centered cohorts.

One of my pals narrated about how he never landed himself a lucrative job opportunity despite him being qualified.

Apparently, someone posted a job vacancy on Facebook. Initially, the job opportunity was open to everyone. However, on the D day, all potential employees that did not hail from a particular ethnic group (him included) were turned away for reasons best known by the employer.
Simply put, a good number of KENYANS returned home jobless and hurt simply because of the tribe they hail from. I bet ones skills and qualifications no longer matter.
That is just one of the many ugly forms in which this monster manifests itself.
Every day, a fair number of Kenyans go to bed with open wounds after an encounter with the very jagged edges of tribalism. And to add salt to injury, they are well aware that they’ll wake up to the same menace the following day

It’s devastating. It’s demoralizing.
My heart bleeds every time I witness a case of tribalism.

For how long will this ghost haunt us?
For how long will we live in strife courtesy of an issue whose solution lies within us?

I won’t offer solutions. That has already been done by one too many people.
I’ll just acknowledge that indeed this is a major sore on our backsides and may be hope that one day Zorro (or some other super hero from my childhood days) will come and tackle this bandit once and for all. Till then, this son of a gun is here to stay.

Someone tell me,

What happened to the “WE ARE ONE” slogan?
