MY DRESS MY BRUISE

This week, the story of a lady who got stripped by touts has made headlines over and over again. Not that it’s a new thing, but simply because most people can’t stand it anymore.

Sadly, Kenya is a country of cowards who hide behind social media to condemn such acts. As if that is going to help anything.
So most people, save for Kimaiyo and his boys took to the internet to badmouth the touts and pass judgement to the culprits as well as empathize with the victim.
But come to think of it. Who was at fault? The lady or the touts?
Personally, I think everyone involved was wrong. Let’s start with the lady.
She is possibly a Kenyan citizen by birth so she knows how preserved the Kenyan society is. The fact that she had the guts to leave wherever she hails from (assuming she lives in a home) in such an outfit shocks me.
I mean, what happened to decency?
Have we binned modesty so much that we actually can’t stand abiding by norms stipulated by our very stringent societal rulebooks?
In addition, one should always be aware of their surroundings at all times. What do I mean? Try showing off your flashy phone in Githurai 44 then you’ll get a practical explanation of what I’m saying. No offence to people from that area.
Honestly speaking, I’m a firm believer of freedom.
Freedom with responsibility.
Of what use is freedom if you can’t accord it the responsibility it demands?
So what if there is freedom of dressing?
That doesn’t mean you have to walk around town a sneeze short of being butt naked to prove whatever point it is that your immature self is trying to drive home. You might as well set up shop somewhere in K.street.
There is a very thin line between classy and ratchet.  Thanks to these socialites, it’s almost impossible for most ladies to tell where exactly that line is supposed to be drawn. It’s such a pity that such ladies are the role models to whom younger female members of the society look up to.
On to the next.
The touts.
This is a bunch of people that should be staked somewhere along Jogoo Road.
To start with, how on earth do you strip a woman for indecent clothing as per your standards?
Are you even aware that decency is relative? Okay. May be that could be a whole new problem as well.
In any case, there are better ways of handling such issues if you are to handle them at all.
No matter how many reasons you cite, nothing will ever justify such a heinous act.
It may not hurt now but wait till it happens to your sisters, mothers or worse still, daughters!  I’m sure it will sting then.

  1. but the outfit wasn't the problem per se, at least according to some eyewitnesses(ladies), apparently there were ladies with shorter skirts around! In as much as the act is barbaric and unjustifiable, i think ladies who fall prey to such barbarians need to think of their dignity. you don't get into an altercation with an uncivilized tout(s) who has nothing to lose. It's like rolling in the mud with a pig thats already dirty or taking yourself into a lions den.
